6 Cool Little-Known Facebook Features

With Facebook growing stronger and larger than life itself, it’s no wonder that the need for more Facebook features and tips increases every day. I’m an avid Facebook user. I prefer it to Twitter, because to me Twitter is more of a newsy site, whereas Facebook adds a lot of personal touch – even if you have your own Facebook Business Page.
The following features are pretty cool for those of you looking for some more ‘wow’ effect. Some of you might already know them, but for most casual users these features are not currently known.

1. Check Out Your Friend’s Phonebook

I recently discovered this really cool feature while playing around with some of the buttons on my page. This feature gives you instant access to all of your friend’s phone numbers. Need to call ‘name’ to arrange a get together for a quick bite to eat in town? Just load this page by going to http://www.facebook.com/friends/edit/?sk=phonebook. The available phone numbers will be easily listed for your convenience.

2. Show Your Mood With Facebook Chat Smileys

Chat smileys for other applications are part and parcel of most regular online users’ chat and email communication. However, many of the usual smileys don’t integrate with Facebook. Lucky though some clever people have come up with the solution.
Next time you are chatting with a good friend why not make your mood public by using the smiley codes below.

If you want even more usability for your status updates then check out these cool Facebook characters symbols. Not bad hey?

3. Download a Year’s Worth of Facebook Data

This feature hasn’t been available for long. It got rolled out in October last year. Here’s what you do to download a year’s worth of status updates to your computer:
  • Go to “Account”
  • Click on “Account Settings”
  • Now click on “Learn more” next to the “Download Your Information” option. After this, click the green “Download” button
It will look like the screenshot below before you click the download button. Please take heed of these warnings and keep your contact details private where possible to preserve your identity.

4. Wanna Know How Many People Switched to Facebook Because of You?

Sure you do. It’s kind of cool knowing that you have brought ‘x amount of’ new peeps to Facebook. This cool feature allows you to see exactly that. It will look like this (only your number and contacts might wary of course).

5. Create a List Feature

A lot of existing Facebook users don’t even know this feature is available. I love it because it allows me to group my friends, based on their likes and dislikes.
You can select a group of friends from which you want to be kept in the loop whenever they publish a status update. The list feature allows you to do just that. It’s a bit like having your own Facebook RSS feed. If you are interested to learn more about this feature, click here for a very good overview.

6. Live Tagging

You can now tag people within their pictures and also while you publish a status update. From within your home profile proceed to write a status update, then add a ‘live, hyperlinked tag’ by typing the @username – as you start to type their name a blueish version of their name will appear. This means the name (tag) is actually live and will show on your friend’s wall once you publish. This is a great way to inform others of your updates.
However. Be wary not to spam with this tool. Only use it for your very good friends and people you like to acknowledge in a good way.
